Bishop Kenneth Carder of the Nashville Area has some words on mission that we are trying to take increasingly seriously as we establish partnerships with persons, organizations, and churches both close to home and far away:

“Mission is often understood and portrayed in terms of those who give mission and those who receive mission. Pictures of starving children are used to motivate generosity from the prosperous. Or people in other cultures are portrayed as "without Christ," while we are called to "take Christ" to them, as though Christ can be transported by the "haves" to the "have nots."

“Indeed, millions in the world could accomplish much with a fraction of the economic resources the American church possesses. And, the gospel of Jesus Christ must be proclaimed to the ends of the earth. However, mission moves beyond mere charity and evangelization involves meeting Christ in the other. One-way mission and one-way evangelism foster paternalism and pious exploitation. They fall short of the mutuality made possible in Jesus Christ and they fail to acknowledge that the risen Christ has not left himself without a witness among any people.

“What gifts do our sisters and brothers in other parts of the world offer to United Methodists in the United States? Here are a few: a faith forged on the anvil of suffering and therefore not dependent on pleasant circumstances; a spiritual vitality and sensitivity that enliven worship; a community of sharing and mutual support in which all are welcome at the table; a growing church that knows how to start new congregations; an ability to bear witness in cultures where Christians are a minority; effective ministry without excessive bureaucracy.

“Mission can be conceived of as being to or with others. Ministry to the other is fraught with elitism and paternalism and diminishes the gifts of the other. Ministry to the poor, for example, makes the poor an object of charity more than the subject of grace and justice. Ministry with, on the other hand, involves solidarity and friendship, which moves beyond charity to justice and mutuality. Let us be in mission with others. “

Through the Outreach Portion of our 50 – 50 Our Journey in Action Campaign, we share our resources and join with others to both see and reveal the activity of the Holy Spirit.
