7th Sunday of Easter

May 4, 2008

Our Mission: "We are called to bring God’s love to all the world,

and to nurture God’s people in their spiritual journeys."

Welcome to our worship service today!

Children are welcome in worship.

Don’t forget Sanctuary Sacks and Gospel Grams for our children.

Note: An Automatic External Defibrillator is stored in the white wall case in the Kitchen off the narthex.

We are always delighted to have visitors seeking fellowship in our Christian community. We invite you to journey with us in Christian ministry and mission. You may indicate your desire to join us on the Ritual of Friendship or by contacting either pastor. Stop by our welcome table for further information.

Flowers on the stand are from Fran and Dan Mealey in honor of grand-daughter Emma Colbey's 11th birthday.

Learning Opportunities

We hope to offer summer Sunday School during our 9:00am worship service, after the children’s message, for age 3 through 3rd grade. Check your calendars and sign up in the narthex, since we can only offer summer classes if we have the teachers to teach!

This Saturday, May 10, 9am-12pm, join us for Red Cross CPR/AED training. This is aimed at Sunday morning regulars like our ushers, but it would also be of interest to any who have wondered about what happens in an emergency. Please let the office know of your intent to come (223-9560 or kathy@fairportumc.org) or sign up opposite the church office in the main hallway.

Fellowship Opportunities

Women of Faith Infinite Grace Conference will be at the Blue Cross Arena June 6 & 7.  See the poster on the bulletin board in the hallway, or contact Sherry Street for more information.

The Rochester Boys Choir will present "At the Movies" in concert here at FUMC this Saturday, May 10 at 7:30pm. More details are in the May newsletter. Please contact Nicole if you are interested in helping with ushering or a reception (set-up, cookies, etc.). Thanks!

Service Opportunities

Save your returnable cans and bottles! The 5th Grade Sunday School Class and the Children's Ministry Team are sponsoring a can/bottle drive to support the United Methodist Children's Fund. Through this event, children learn about mission and have an opportunity to give beyond our local church. Place them in or near the green can in the coat room.

It is time to start the lawn mowing for the church and our Filkins Street house. If you are available to help, PLEASE sign up on the Lawn Mowing schedule outside the church office. Thank you…..the Trustees.

Beyond These Walls (BTW) would like to thank all who supported the April Rummage sale and shared some of your purchases to benefit the homeless shelters and G.U.M. During the month of May we’re requesting toiletries and personal care items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, hair combs & brushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, deodorant, tissues, or toilet paper. Drop off donations in the designated bin in the parlor.

The Cooking Ministry is requesting food donations for their Friday, May 16, food preparation for the Francis Center and Sanctuary House on Sunday, May18. If you can help, please see the items needed on the bulletin board outside the church office. The items need to be delivered by Thursday, May 15 by 11:00am. If you would like to explore the possibility of joining us on one of the visits to either shelter, please ask! Call Kathryn Pridey, 425-7429, or Sue Golembeski, 425-9898.

Connecting with Christ in the City, May 17, 9am – 2pm. Join with others from city and suburban churches for a day of building relationships and working together at Emmanuel UMC—details and sign up on bulletin board, or contact margaret@fairportumc.org.

Summer Camp – We’re again hosting Miss Maggie’s Kids for a four-day camp on July 14,15,17 & 18 and need adult and youth volunteers who are High School Juniors and older who are willing to serve in some capacity! Contact Pam for more information or to volunteer. More info in the June Newsletter as well. This is a great way to reach "Beyond These Walls".

Planting seeds for life! Teachers needed for fall 2008 Sunday School classes. Please pick up info in the narthex and call, email or see Pam Renfro if you would like additional information.

General Announcements

On June 1, the 9am PreK through 2nd Grade classes will come into worship to offer that morning’s centering song. To assist teachers we ask that your child(ren) arrive in class by 8:55am. Further details are included on a handout distributed in your child’s Sunday School class.

Service Music Texts

In the Bread Broken

In the bread broken, in the wine poured,

In the word spoken, we meet our living Lord.

Hungry souls are satisfied, wounded hearts are healed, restored.

In the word we meet our living Lord.

In our need, in our care, fellowship is sweet;

For in the bread and the wine, we are made complete.

In the bread broken, we seek his face, we taste his grace,

In the word spoken, we meet our risen Lord.

Oh, Lord, have mercy on me.

O Living Bread from Heaven

O living bread from heaven, how well you feed your guest.

The gifts that you have given have filled my heart with rest.

O wondrous food of blessing, O cup that heals our woes:

My heart, this gift possessing, with praises overflows.

My Lord, you here have led me within your holy place,

And here yourself have fed me with treasures of your grace.

For you have freely given what earth could never buy,

The bread of life possessing, that now I will not die.

You gave me all I wanted this food can death destroy.

And you have freely granted the cup of endless joy.

My Lord, I do not merit the favor you have shown,

Lord, all my soul and spirit bow down before your throne.

Lord, grant me then, so strengthened with heavenly food, while here

My course on earth is lengthened, to serve with holy fear.

And when you call my spirit to leave this world below,

I enter, through your merit, where joys unmingled flow.

Unison Prayer

Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from death to life, and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him, or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the ways of the world, and failed to give him glory. Forgive us, and raise us from sin, that we may be your faithful people, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen.

LEARNING TAKE HOME SHEET

Scripture focus:

Ephesians 1:15-23

Scripture message:

Glorious Inheritance

Memory verse:

Ephesians 1:18

So that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints.

Questions for the Journey, based on Ephesians 1:15-23:

1) What worldly inheritance have you received?

2) How would you ask to be enlightened with a spirit of wisdom and revelation?

3) How does the doctrine of the ascension make a difference?

4) What do you think it means that the Church is Christ’s body in the world?

Prayer for the week

Eternal God, by raising Jesus from the dead you proclaimed his victory, and by his ascension, you declared him Lord of all. Lift up our hearts to heaven where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
